'The Darkest Hour.' War is a tragedy. But desperate times have brought out some incredibly ingenious, inventive and often eccentric people.
Heroic and curious experiments, odd ideas, scientific intelligence and cunning deception. This central London walk embraces a wide range of topics and typically also includes unexpected detours into patent medicine and the circus. My emphasis is on showing homes, haunts and work places, not statues and war memorials.
This tour comes in different mixes. I usually cover World War 1 and World War 2. But it is possible to concentrate on World War 1, or perhaps only on those boffins who were close to Winston Churchill at various times, or include some espionage stories.
To enjoy this tour you do not have to be interested in military matters, just curious about those dark times and the scientific contributions to ending them.
You may also find other aspects of wartime science brought out in my neighbourhood tours.
